Things to consider:
It’s important that you, the student-athlete, take charge of your own college search and consider what it is that YOU want and why. Playing soccer in college is a huge commitment. Getting accepted into college is challenging and takes years of hard work in preparation. Doing both, playing and studying, requires discipline and sacrifice. Are you ready to do the work?
-
Do you do have an exceptional work rate? Are you always looking for ways to get better such as joining extra practices or working on your footwork before school? What are you doing to help yourself standout?
Are you versatile and able to play different positions?
Are you fast, strong, and/or agile?
Are you good with the ball at your feet? Can you take players on, protect the ball, and are you dangerous in front of the goal?
Are you good in the air and can you head the ball?
Do you communicate and direct play?
Are you a defender that no one can get behind?
Are you resilient when mistakes happen? Do you use the opportunity to work even harder?
-
Coaches will research how you represent yourself on social media. Be mindful that what you post never goes away and can impact opportunities in the future—both academically and athletically.
-
Remember that your ultimate goal is pursuing a good education. Doing well in school will open more doors throughout your life, including more opportunities to be recruited to play soccer.
Who you are as a student is another way to standout and attract coaches to come watch you play.
Don’t forget that college playing eligibility is also based on academic performance.
